Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) - Peace Be Upon Him

The Most Beautiful Story - From the Well to the Throne of Egypt

The story of Prophet Joseph - peace be upon him - is described in the Quran as "Ahsan al-Qasas" - the most beautiful of stories. It is the only story in the Quran told in a single continuous narrative, spanning an entire surah (Surah Yusuf, Chapter 12). It is a story of jealousy and betrayal, of patience and faith, of temptation and purity, of imprisonment and vindication, of poverty and power. It is a story that teaches us that no matter how dark the night, dawn will eventually break. No matter how deep the well, God's plan will lift you to the highest heights.

Why is it the most beautiful story? Unlike any other Quranic narrative, the story of Joseph is told in a single flowing account. It contains every human emotion: love, hate, jealousy, desire, patience, despair, hope, forgiveness, and triumph. It shows how God's plan unfolds through the most unlikely events. A boy thrown into a well becomes the savior of nations. A prisoner becomes a king. A slave becomes a prophet.

🌟 The Dream: A Glimpse of Destiny

Joseph was the beloved son of Prophet Jacob (Israel). He was extraordinarily handsome, known for his beauty and purity of character. One morning, the young Joseph came to his father with a strange and wonderful dream: "O my father, I saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon - I saw them prostrating to me." (Quran 12:4). Jacob, a prophet himself, immediately understood the significance. His son was destined for greatness. But he warned Joseph: "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they plot against you a plot. Indeed Satan is an open enemy to man." (Quran 12:5). Jacob knew the hearts of his other sons. He knew their jealousy could drive them to terrible things.

🕳️ The Well: Betrayal by Blood

Joseph's ten older brothers were consumed with jealousy. They saw how their father loved Joseph and his younger brother Benjamin - the two sons of the beloved Rachel. "Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we are, while we are a strong group. Indeed, our father is in clear error," they said. They plotted to get rid of Joseph. Some wanted to kill him. Others suggested throwing him into a well where travelers might find him and take him away. They came to Jacob with a plan: "O our father, why do you not entrust Joseph to us? We will surely be his well-wishers. Send him with us tomorrow to enjoy himself and play, and we will surely guard him." Jacob reluctantly agreed, fearing a wolf might eat him while they were distracted. The brothers took Joseph into the wilderness, stripped him of his shirt, and threw him into a deep well. They slaughtered a goat, stained Joseph's shirt with its blood, and returned to their father weeping: "O our father, we went racing and left Joseph with our belongings, and a wolf ate him!" Jacob saw through the lie. The shirt was torn, but not by a wolf's teeth. He said: "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something. So patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against what you describe." (Quran 12:18).

🏛️ The Palace: Temptation and Purity

A caravan of traders found Joseph in the well and took him to Egypt, where they sold him as a slave. He was purchased by Al-Aziz, the chief minister of Egypt. Al-Aziz's wife - traditionally known as Zulaikha - was captivated by Joseph's extraordinary beauty. As Joseph grew into manhood, his beauty became legendary. The Quran says Allah gave him "wisdom and knowledge" (Quran 12:22). Zulaikha became obsessed. She locked the doors and tried to seduce him. Joseph, a man of God, resisted. He said: "I seek refuge in Allah! Indeed, he is my master who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed." (Quran 12:23). He ran toward the door. She chased him and tore his shirt from behind. At that moment, Al-Aziz entered. Seeing the torn shirt, a witness from her household said: "If his shirt is torn from the front, she has told the truth and he is the liar. But if his shirt is torn from the back, she has lied and he is the truthful." The shirt was torn from behind. Joseph was vindicated.

👩‍👩‍👧 The Banquet: Women Cut Their Hands

News spread among the women of the city: "The wife of Al-Aziz is trying to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love." Zulaikha invited these women to a banquet. She gave each of them a knife and fruits to cut. Then she called Joseph to appear before them. When they saw him, they were so stunned by his beauty that they cut their hands! "Great is Allah! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel!" they exclaimed. Zulaikha said: "This is the one about whom you blamed me. I certainly tried to seduce him, but he firmly refused. And if he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned." (Quran 12:32).

🔒 The Prison: Years of Patience

To save his honor and avoid further scandal, Joseph was imprisoned - despite his innocence. He entered prison alongside two young men who had served the king. Both had strange dreams. One said: "I saw myself pressing wine." The other said: "I saw myself carrying bread on my head from which birds were eating." They asked Joseph to interpret their dreams, for they saw he was a righteous man. Before interpreting, Joseph gave them dawah: "O my two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing? You worship not besides Him except names you have named." Then he interpreted: one would serve wine to his master and be freed; the other would be crucified. To the one who would be freed, Joseph said: "Mention me to your master." But Satan made him forget, and Joseph remained in prison for several more years. Some say seven years passed.

👑 The King's Dream: Freedom and Power

The king of Egypt had a disturbing dream: seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and seven dry ones. None of his advisors could interpret it. The former prisoner remembered Joseph and told the king about him. Joseph interpreted: "You will plant for seven consecutive years. What you harvest leave in its ear except a little you will eat. Then will come after that seven difficult years which will consume what you saved, except a little you will store. Then will come after that a year in which the people will be given rain and will press olives and grapes." The king was impressed. He summoned Joseph. But Joseph refused to leave prison until his name was cleared. He said: "Return to your master and ask him what is the case of the women who cut their hands." The king questioned the women. They admitted: "We know nothing evil against him." Zulaikha herself confessed: "Now the truth has become clear. It was I who tried to seduce him, and indeed, he is of the truthful." (Quran 12:51).

🏛️ From Prisoner to Ruler

Joseph was brought before the king. Seeing his wisdom, integrity, and the divine gift of dream interpretation, the king appointed him as the overseer of Egypt's resources - effectively the second most powerful man in the land. Joseph asked to be placed in charge of the granaries and storehouses, for he knew how to manage the coming years of plenty and famine. And so, the boy who was thrown into a well became the ruler of Egypt.

😊 The Reunion: Forgiveness and Tears

When the famine struck, it affected not only Egypt but also Canaan. Joseph's brothers came to Egypt seeking grain. They did not recognize the powerful Egyptian official as their lost brother, but Joseph recognized them. After a series of encounters where Joseph tested their character, he finally revealed himself: "Do you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?" They were stunned. "Are you indeed Joseph?" they asked. "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, whoever fears Allah and is patient - then indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of those who do good to be lost." The brothers bowed their heads in shame. Joseph said the most beautiful words: "No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you. And He is the Most Merciful of the merciful." (Quran 12:92). He sent his shirt back with them. When it was placed over Jacob's face, his eyesight was restored after years of blindness. The entire family - Jacob, the eleven brothers, their wives, and children - migrated to Egypt. When they arrived, Joseph welcomed his parents and seated them on the throne. Then they all prostrated to Joseph. At that moment, Joseph remembered the dream he had as a child: "O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of long ago. My Lord has made it reality." (Quran 12:100).

"No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you. And He is the Most Merciful of the merciful."

— Prophet Joseph forgiving his brothers, Quran 12:92

Conclusion: The Most Beautiful Story: The story of Joseph is ultimately about trust in God's plan. The jealous brothers could not destroy Joseph - their actions only propelled him toward his destiny. The well led to the caravan. The caravan led to Egypt. The palace led to prison. The prison led to power. Every setback was a setup for a comeback. Joseph's patience through years of injustice, his purity in the face of temptation, his wisdom in managing crisis, and his forgiveness of those who wronged him - these qualities made him a model for all humanity. As the Quran says at the end of the surah: "There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding." (Quran 12:111).
