There has never been a more terrifying figure in Islamic eschatology than the Masih ad-Dajjal — the "False Messiah." The Prophet Muhammad said of him: "There has never been a tribulation greater than the tribulation of the Dajjal, from the time of the creation of Adam until the establishment of the Hour." The Dajjal will appear at a time of great chaos and despair. He will claim to be God. He will travel across the earth with astonishing speed, bringing a false paradise and a false hell. He will have with him rivers of water and mountains of bread. Whoever follows him will be showered with apparent blessings. Whoever rejects him will be afflicted with famine and suffering. He will heal the blind and raise the dead — by God's permission, as a test. The word "Kafir" (disbeliever) will be written between his eyes, visible to every believer, literate or illiterate. He will be blind in his right eye — a malignant, bulging eye like a floating grape — while his left eye will be intact. His greatest deception will be his claim to divinity, a claim he will support with miracles that mimic the miracles of the prophets. But there is a weapon against him: the opening verses of Surah Al-Kahf. The Prophet urged his followers to memorize these verses, for they are a fortress against the Dajjal's deception. Eventually, the Dajjal will be killed — not by the Mahdi, not by an army, but by Jesus, the son of Mary, who will descend from the heavens and pursue the Dajjal to the Gate of Ludd (Lod, in modern Israel). When the Dajjal sees Jesus, he will dissolve like salt in water. Jesus will strike him with a spear and end the greatest trial the world has ever known.
Summary: The Dajjal (al-Masih ad-Dajjal) is a central figure in Islamic eschatology. He is not mentioned in the Quran but is extensively described in over 60 hadiths. He will appear from the East, travel the entire earth in 40 days, claim to be God, and perform false miracles. He will be blind in the right eye. The word "Kafir" — disbeliever — will be written on his forehead. He will be followed by 70,000 Jews from Isfahan. Jesus will descend from heaven, pursue the Dajjal, and kill him at the Gate of Ludd (Lod). The Dajjal's emergence is one of the major signs of the Hour. Muslims are instructed to seek refuge from him in their daily prayers.
👁️ The One-Eyed Deceiver
The Prophet described the Dajjal in vivid terms: "His right eye is blind, like a floating grape. Between his eyes is written 'Kafir' — disbeliever. Every believer, literate or illiterate, will be able to read it." The Dajjal is a corporeal being — a man, though of monstrous aspect. He will be of short stature, with curly hair and reddish complexion. He will first claim to be a prophet, then claim to be the Messiah, and finally claim to be God himself. His appeal will be to a world desperate for a savior. The Dajjal is not simply a monster; he is a test of faith. The Prophet said: "The Dajjal will come to a people and call them, and they will believe in him. He will command the sky to rain, and it will rain. He will command the earth, and it will bring forth its produce. Then he will come to a people who reject him, and he will leave them, and they will be afflicted with drought and famine."
The Fortress — Surah Al-Kahf
"Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal." The Prophet urged his followers: "If he appears while I am among you, I will dispute with him on your behalf. But if he appears and I am not among you, then each person must dispute with him on his own behalf. And God will be my successor over every Muslim."
⚔️ The Death of the Dajjal
According to hadith, Jesus (Isa) will descend near the white minaret east of Damascus. He will join the Mahdi's army and pursue the Dajjal. The Dajjal, who has terrorized the world for 40 days, will flee in terror. Jesus will catch him at the "Gate of Ludd" (Lod, in present-day Israel). At the sight of Jesus, the Dajjal will begin to dissolve "like salt in water." Jesus will strike him with a spear, killing him. He will then display the Dajjal's blood on his spear and say to the believers: "This is the enemy of God." The greatest deception in human history will be over.
📖 The Legacy
The story of the Dajjal is a profound lesson in Islamic theology about the nature of evil: it comes disguised as good. The Dajjal's power does not lie in terror but in seduction. He offers prosperity, healing, and apparent miracles. His paradise is actually hell, and his hell is actually paradise. To follow him is to be deceived by the most beautiful lie. The faithful are warned: do not trust your eyes. Trust the Word of God.
