⏳ The Signs of the Hour

The Minor Signs of the Day of Judgment

One day, the Angel Gabriel — appearing in the form of a man dressed in white — sat before the Prophet Muhammad and asked him: "O Messenger of God, when is the Hour?" The Prophet replied: "The one questioned knows no more than the questioner." This famous hadith, narrated by Umar ibn al-Khattab, establishes that the exact knowledge of the Day of Judgment belongs to God alone. But the Prophet did not leave his followers without signs. Over his lifetime, he described a series of events — minor and major — that would herald the approach of the Last Hour. The minor signs (Ashrat al-Sa'ah al-Sughra) are the early warnings: the proliferation of ignorance, the loss of knowledge, the widespread consumption of intoxicants, the competition to build tall buildings by barefoot shepherds, the slave woman giving birth to her master, the spread of immorality, and the abundance of wealth. Many of these signs are already visible in the modern world — an observation that believers find deeply unsettling. The minor signs are not cataclysmic; they are subtle, cumulative, and gradual. They are the slow decay of the moral order. When they are complete, the major signs — the appearance of the Mahdi, the arrival of the Dajjal, the descent of Jesus, the release of Gog and Magog — will begin. This is a survey of the early warnings: the world's slow march toward its final hour.

Summary: The Signs of the Hour in Islamic eschatology are divided into minor signs (Ashrat al-Sa'ah al-Sughra) and major signs (Ashrat al-Sa'ah al-Kubra). The minor signs are events that occur gradually over time: the loss of religious knowledge, the spread of ignorance and immorality, the prevalence of alcohol and usury, the competition to build tall buildings, the increase in killing, the contraction of time, and the slave woman giving birth to her master. These signs have been occurring throughout Islamic history, and many scholars believe most of them have already appeared. The major signs include the Mahdi, the Dajjal, the return of Jesus, Gog and Magog, the rising of the sun from the West, the Beast of the Earth, and the Fire that will gather humanity. The Hour itself will be announced by the blowing of the Trumpet by the Angel Israfil.

📜 The Slave Woman Giving Birth to Her Master

This is one of the earliest and most enigmatic signs. In the Hadith of Gabriel, the Prophet listed it among the signs: "You will see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings, and the slave woman giving birth to her master." Scholars have interpreted this in multiple ways: the reversal of the social order, the disobedience of children to parents, or — literally — that a concubine's child would eventually rule over a tribe or nation that once enslaved her people. The sign points to a world where traditional hierarchies are inverted.

The Tall Buildings — Dubai, 21st Century

"The Prophet spoke of barefoot, destitute shepherds competing to build the tallest buildings. Today, the Gulf nations — whose grandparents were desert nomads — vie to erect the world's tallest skyscrapers. The Burj Khalifa pierces the sky. The faithful look up and remember the prophecy."

🕊️ The Loss of Knowledge

The Prophet said: "God does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes it away by taking away the scholars. Until, when no scholar remains, people will take the ignorant as their leaders. They will be asked, and they will give verdicts without knowledge. They are misguided and they misguide others." The death of genuine scholarship, the rise of pseudo-learned influencers, and the proliferation of unqualified opinions are signs of the Hour.

📖 The Signs Today

Muslim scholars throughout history have debated which signs have already occurred and which remain. But many agree that the following are visible in the contemporary world: the spread of usury (riba) in the global economy, the prevalence of alcohol and drugs, the acceptance of immorality, the abundance of wealth and competition in luxuries, the contraction of time (instant communication), the increase in random killing, and the widespread neglect of religious obligations. The faithful view these not merely as social trends but as prophetic signs.
