🇲🇿 FRELIMO – Mozambique's Liberation

1962-1975 – 10 Years of Armed Struggle Against Portugal

On June 25, 1975, a new flag was raised in the skies of Maputo (formerly Lourenço Marques). A flag with green, black, yellow, and white. In its corner: a red star. Above an open book: an AK-47 and a hoe. The flag summarized the country's story: armed struggle, labor, study, and education. Mozambique had gained independence from Portugal after 10 years of brutal guerrilla war. FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique) led this struggle. From bases in the bush and on the Tanzanian border, it waged a war that exhausted the Portuguese empire. Its first leader: Eduardo Mondlane, the poet and thinker assassinated before independence. Its military commander: Samora Machel, who became the country's first president. This is the story of Mozambique's liberation war. Ten years of blood and fire. A people who refused colonialism. And paid a heavy price for freedom.

Summary: Mozambique was a Portuguese colony for 470 years (since 1498). FRELIMO was founded in 1962 in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) under Eduardo Mondlane. Armed struggle began in 1964. 10 years of guerrilla warfare. In 1974, the "Carnation Revolution" overthrew the Portuguese dictatorship. The new government granted Mozambique independence in 1975. Samora Machel became the first president. But the country immediately entered a civil war backed by South Africa and Rhodesia that lasted 16 years and killed a million people.

🇵🇹 Portugal: Africa's Oldest Colonial Empire

The Portuguese arrived in Mozambique in 1498 (Vasco da Gama). They established trading posts on the coast. Then moved inland. Enslaved the population. Plundered gold and ivory. For 470 years, Mozambique was a "Portuguese overseas province." But Portugal, unlike Britain and France, refused to grant its colonies independence after World War II. Dictator António Salazar (ruled 1932-1968) saw the colonies as "integral parts of Portugal." He sent hundreds of thousands of Portuguese settlers. Exploited cheap labor on cotton and cashew plantations. Denied Africans education (90% illiteracy). Imposed forced labor (chibalo). Africans were treated as third-class citizens in their own land. Salazar said: "Mozambique is Portuguese. And will remain Portuguese." He was wrong. The winds were changing.

✊ The Founding of FRELIMO: Unity in Exile

On June 25, 1962 (exactly 13 years before independence), leaders of Mozambican liberation movements met in Dar es Salaam, the capital of neighboring Tanzania. They were three separate movements. They decided to unite. Founded the "Mozambique Liberation Front" – FRELIMO. Elected Eduardo Mondlane as president. Mondlane (1920-1969) was an exceptional figure. Studied in South Africa, Portugal, and the United States. Worked for the United Nations. He was a poet. A writer. An orator. He believed Mozambique was not merely tribes, but one nation. His motto: "One Mozambique. One People. One Nation." He combined Marxism (learned in the West) with African traditions. In his first speech, he said: "The struggle will be long. But victory is certain." In 1964, the armed struggle began.

"Mozambique is not scattered tribes. We are one nation. One people. And we will seize our freedom with our own hands."

— Eduardo Mondlane, founder of FRELIMO, 1962

🌸 The Carnation Revolution: The Empire Collapses

On April 25, 1974, something no one expected happened. In Lisbon, junior officers of the Portuguese army staged a peaceful coup. They called it the "Carnation Revolution" (because they placed carnations in the muzzles of their rifles). They overthrew the dictatorship that had ruled Portugal for 48 years. Why? Because the Portuguese army was exhausted. It was fighting 3 colonial wars simultaneously: in Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau. 13,000 Portuguese soldiers had been killed in these wars. 100,000 wounded. The military budget consumed 40% of GNP. Young Portuguese men were fleeing conscription. The young officers (who had fought in Africa) knew victory was impossible. They were fed up. So they revolted. The new government's first decision: grant independence to the colonies. On June 25, 1975, the flag of Mozambique was raised.

FRELIMO's Strategy: "Liberated Zones" – liberate an area, build civilian administration, schools, hospitals, farms. Then expand. This is how they won popular support.
