🤲 Intercession on Judgment Day

The Grand Intercession – Al-Maqam Al-Mahmud

On the Day of Judgment, when the sun draws near to the heads by a mile, and people drown in their own sweat, and the horrors intensify, and the standing stretches for fifty thousand years... all of creation will stand, from Adam to the last human being, barefoot, naked, uncircumcised, no one speaking except by God's permission. At that moment... people will search for a savior. An intercessor. They will go to Adam, then Noah, then Abraham, then Moses, then Jesus (peace be upon them all)... and each one will apologize. Until they reach Muhammad ﷺ. He will say: "I am for it... I am for it." He will prostrate beneath the Throne, and God will open upon him such praises as He has never opened upon anyone from the worlds. Then it will be said to him: "O Muhammad, raise your head, ask and you shall be given, intercede and you shall be granted intercession." This is "The Grand Intercession" – the Praised Station (Al-Maqam Al-Mahmud) that God promised him in His saying: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Praised Station." This is the greatest story of hope on that terrible day.

Summary: Intercession (Shafa'ah) in Islam is mediation on behalf of others to bring benefit or repel harm on the Day of Judgment, by God's permission. It is of two types: rejected intercession (for false intercessors like idols, or without God's permission) and accepted intercession (by God's permission for His special servants). The Grand Intercession is exclusive to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: to intercede for all creation to begin the Reckoning. There are other intercessions: for entering Paradise without account, for raising ranks, and for removing sinful monotheists from Hell.

🕌 The Grand Intercession – The Praised Station

This is the greatest intercession at the Standing. No one possesses it except Muhammad ﷺ. How does it happen? After the Standing prolongs for people and the distress and anguish become unbearable, they will say to one another: "Do you not see what has befallen you? Will you not look for someone to intercede for you with your Lord?" They will come to Adam (peace be upon him), and he will say: "Indeed, my Lord has become angry today such as He has never been angry before, and will never be angry again. I was forbidden from the tree and I disobeyed. Myself, myself, myself... go to someone else." They will go to Noah, and he will say similar. Then Abraham, and he will apologize. Then Moses, and he will apologize. Then Jesus, and he will apologize – not mentioning any sin, but saying: "Go to Muhammad, a servant whose past and future sins God has forgiven." They will come to the Prophet ﷺ, and he will say: "I am for it." He will go until he reaches the Throne and fall in prostration. God will inspire him with such praises as He has never inspired anyone before him. Then it will be said: "O Muhammad, raise your head, ask and you shall be given, intercede and you shall be granted." He will raise his head and say: "O Lord, my nation, my nation." A limit will be set for him and he will enter them into Paradise.

"I am the master of the children of Adam on the Day of Judgment, and I am not boasting. The Banner of Praise will be in my hand, and I am not boasting. There is no prophet on that day – Adam and those after him – except under my banner."

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, authentic Hadith

👥 Types of Intercession

Accepted intercession in Islam is divided into several types, the most famous: First: The Grand Intercession – exclusive to our Prophet ﷺ, for the commencement of Reckoning. Second: Intercession for entering Paradise without account – narrated in the two Sahihs: "Seventy thousand of my nation will enter Paradise without account... they are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not believe in omens, do not cauterize, and rely upon their Lord." Third: Intercession for raising ranks in Paradise. Fourth: Intercession for removing sinful monotheists from Hell – the greatest intercession after the Grand one. God will remove from Hell those who had an atom's weight of faith, through the intercession of the Prophet ﷺ, the angels, the prophets, and the believers.

👼 Who Are the Intercessors?

The intercessors on Judgment Day are many, but they do not intercede except with God's permission. God said: "Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" The greatest intercessor: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then all the prophets – each prophet has an answered supplication, but they all used it in this world except the Prophet ﷺ who saved his for intercession on Judgment Day. Then the angels: they seek forgiveness for the believers and intercede for them. Then the martyrs: the martyr in God's path intercedes for seventy of his family. Then Muslim children: they intercede for their parents. Then the Quran: it comes on Judgment Day as an intercessor for its companions. Then fasting: God says, "Fasting is for Me and I reward it," and it intercedes for its companion.

The Last Person to Leave Hell: In Sahih Muslim: "The last person to leave Hell will be a man who crawls... he will say: O Lord, turn my face away from the Fire. God will make a covenant with him that he will not ask for anything else. Then he will ask for Paradise. God will say: O son of Adam, how treacherous you are! Did you not make a covenant?" Such is God's mercy that encompasses all things.
