Patrice Émery Lumumba (1925-1961) was the first democratically elected Prime Minister in the history of Congo. He was only 35 years old. A fiery orator. A dream: a united and free Africa. On June 30, 1960, Congo gained independence from Belgium. At the independence ceremony, Lumumba delivered a speech in front of the King of Belgium (Baudouin) in which he savagely attacked Belgian colonialism: "We are no longer your monkeys!" Only 12 weeks later... he was dead. Overthrown by a military coup (led by Mobutu, with CIA and Belgian support). Delivered to his enemies in Katanga (the secessionist province). Tortured. Executed by firing squad (along with two companions). Then... his body was dissolved in sulfuric acid. Not a single bone remained. No grave. They wanted to erase him from history. But they failed. Lumumba became an icon. The martyr of African independence.
Summary: Patrice Lumumba (1925-1961). First Prime Minister of independent Congo (June-September 1960). Overthrown by Mobutu's coup (with CIA and Belgian support). Arrested. Delivered to enemies in Katanga. Executed by firing squad January 17, 1961 (age 35). Body dissolved in sulfuric acid. Responsible: Mobutu Sese Seko, Moïse Tshombe (Katanga leader), Belgian officers, CIA (which plotted his assassination). In 2002, Belgium officially admitted its moral responsibility.
🇺🇸 The CIA: "Lumumba Must Disappear"
In August 1960, CIA Director (Allen Dulles) sent a cable to the CIA station in Leopoldville (Kinshasa): "Lumumba must disappear. This is an urgent and top priority decision." President Eisenhower himself said: "Lumumba is someone who must be eliminated." Why this fear? Because Lumumba asked for Soviet help (when the West refused to help him suppress the Katanga rebellion). This was the Cold War nightmare: Africa turning communist. The CIA plotted his assassination: poison in toothpaste. A sniper. But the military coup (led by Mobutu) solved the problem. Mobutu (who was on the CIA payroll) arrested Lumumba. He delivered him to his enemies.
"I would rather die with my head held high... than live on my knees."
🩸 January 17, 1961: Execution and Dissolution
On January 17, 1961, Lumumba and his two companions (Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito) were transported to a forest near Elisabethville (Katanga). They were handcuffed. Blindfolded. Beaten brutally during the journey. At the forest, they were lined up in front of 3 trees. Belgian soldiers (led by a Belgian officer) opened fire. 3 shots to the chest. 3 shots to the head (to make sure). They buried the bodies in a shallow grave. But they realized: the grave could become a shrine. Two days later, they dug up the bodies. They cut them with a saw. They dissolved them in a barrel of concentrated sulfuric acid. The bones that did not dissolve... were burned. The ashes were scattered in the forest. Nothing remained. No body. No grave. No trace.
One Golden Tooth: The Belated Confession
"In 2002, 41 years after the assassination, Belgium officially admitted its 'moral responsibility' for Lumumba's death. Foreign Minister Louis Michel said: 'This should not have happened. We bear part of the responsibility.' In 2022, Belgium returned 'one golden tooth' (the remains of a molar) to Lumumba's family. This was all that remained of his body (kept as a souvenir by a Belgian officer!). The tooth was buried in a memorial monument in Kinshasa. Lumumba — whose entire body was dissolved — returned to his homeland... in a single tooth. His son François (who was an infant at the time of the assassination) received the tooth. He said: 'My father has finally returned.'"
