He never leaves it (stays there until death, then replaced by another monk). Ethiopians (the Ethiopian Orthodox Church) believe that the Ark of the Covenant has been in this church for 3,000 years. The story: the Queen of Sheba (Ethiopian) visited Solomon. She bore him a son: Menelik I. When Menelik grew up, he visited his father in Jerusalem. On his return... he took the Ark with him (or Solomon secretly gave it to him). Since then, the Ark has been in Ethiopia. Every Ethiopian church has a replica (tabot). But the original... is in Axum. Is this true? Historians are skeptical. But Ethiopians believe.

What Does the Quran Say?
"In the Quran (Surah Al-Baqarah: 248): 'And their prophet said to them: Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest (Tabut) will come to you, in it is tranquility from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron left behind, carried by the angels. Indeed, in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.' The Quran mentions the Ark (Tabut al-Sakinah) as a sign of the kingship of Talut (Saul). It contains 'a remnant of what the family of Moses and Aaron left behind.' The angels carry it. After this verse, the Quran says nothing about the fate of the Ark. It vanished from history."
